Updated United Kingdom Travel Advisory

RDU Airport, NC – The following information is offered for international travelers utilizing RDU’s daily non-stop service to London ‘s Gatwick Airport and traveling one-stop to other destinations in the United Kingdom. On Aug. 10, 2006 the Transportation Security Administration issued a security directive requiring the elimination of liquids and gels from carry-on luggage at airport security checkpoints.

Each passenger departing from the U.K. is allowed one carry-on bag with maximum dimensions of 45 centimeters/17.72 inches long, 35 centimeters/13.78 inches wide, 16 centimeters/6.3 inches deep.

Nothing may be carried in passengers’ pockets. Passengers may only take the following items through the airport security checkpoint, in a single transparent plastic bag — all other items must be processed as checked baggage:

  • pocket size wallets and pocket size purses plus contents (money, credit cards, identity cards, etc. but not handbags or purses unless within the guidelines mentioned above)
  • travel documents
  • prescription medicines and medical items may be carried provided that the total amount to be carried in the cabin is less than 50ml (includes medicines in liquid, cream or gel form) sufficient and essential for the flight (a diabetic kit for example), except in liquid form unless verified as authentic. Essential medicines in tablet form or powder form (up to 50g) can be carried in the cabin without being subject to a verification procedure.
  • eye glasses and sunglasses, without cases
  • contact lens cases, without bottles of solution
  • for those traveling with an infant: baby food, milk and sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight (wipes, creams, disposal bags)
  • female sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight, if unboxed
  • tissues (unboxed) and/or handkerchiefs
  • keys (but no electrical key fobs)
  • Non-liquid items from duty free areas (no gels, pastes, lotions, liquid/solid mixtures or pressurized containers allowed)
  • Electronic equipment including laptops, mobile phones, digital cameras and MP3 players (such as iPods). Laptops must be removed from the bag for x-ray.

The definition of liquids by the TSA and U.K. Department of Transport include gels, pastes, lotions, liquid/solid mixtures and the contents of pressurized containers, e.g. toothpaste, hair gel, drinks, soups, syrups, perfume, deodorant, shaving foam, aerosols, etc.

If an item does not appear in the list above it is not allowed. Additionally, no liquids, gels or other items of similar consistency are permitted beyond the security checkpoint.
