RDU Airport, NC – Beginning this evening, the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority will conduct random inspections of vehicles approaching the airport terminals. The changes are in response to the Department of Homeland Security’s announcement that it was raising the threat level from yellow to orange. RDU received a directive from the Transportation Security Administration outlining the additional security measures.

Signs will inform drivers of the inspection process as they enter the airport. All vehicles are subject to the random inspections.

In addition to vehicle inspections, passengers will see signs advising them to report any unattended packages to airport employees. As always, the Authority will maintain a strong police presence throughout the airport.

Customers traveling to the airport should be reminded that the US-70/Lumley Road entrance to the airport terminals will be closed. Park and Ride 4 will be open but access to the terminals will be restricted to the entrance accessible from Aviation Parkway and Airport Boulevard. Drivers will be able to exit the airport via the US-70/Lumley Road exit.

The airport last implemented vehicle inspections on in March when the Department of Homeland Security raised the threat level to orange. The level was decreased to yellow on April 16, 2003.

When the threat level is changed, the Authority works closely with the TSA to identify and implement the necessary security changes.
