RDU Prepares for Blast of Wintry Weather

We’re heating up the hot chocolate and cranking up the snowplows at RDU as the Triangle prepares for its first snowfall of the season! With a blast of bitter cold temperatures and a chance of snow on the way, we are taking steps to avoid disruptions to airport operations.

Team RDU is mobilizing airport and contract employees for snow removal duty, including clearing runways, taxiways, roads and sidewalks throughout the storm and responding to slick spots. We are reviewing our winter weather plans and working with airlines, concessionaires and other business partners to ensure the comfort of passengers in our terminals. Our team is also in close coordination with the National Weather Service in Raleigh to receive the most up-to-date forecasts before the first snowflakes fall.

If you’re flying from RDU, please check the status of your flight with your airline before heading to the airport. Airline schedules can change quickly depending on conditions. Allow plenty of extra time to travel to the airport, as area roads may be affected.

All remote parking lots that require shuttle service are closed due to COVID-19. Airport customers can stay out of the snow and enjoy covered parking in the ParkRDU Premier and Central lots, conveniently located between Terminals 1 and 2 in the parking garage. We have discounted the daily maximum rate to only $10/day in ParkRDU Central.

If winter weather creates cancellations and delays at RDU, you’ll be able to find information in several places:

  • The best place to find flight status is by checking with your airline directly
  • We share regular flight status updates on RDU.com, including the number of delays and cancellations and airline phone numbers to call
  • RDU’s social media accounts share news and updates from around the airport leading up to and during winter storms. Follow us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram for winter coverage

You might be wondering if the airport will stay open. RDU typically does not close during winter weather – even if there are significant impacts to flight operations – so that scheduled flights can depart and return, and travelers can enjoy uninterrupted access to our restaurants, shops and other services. If weather delays you at the airport for an extended period, you will have access to amenities like free Wi-Fi so you can relax and prepare for a safe journey.
