RDU Airport, NC – Raleigh-Durham International Airport officials are predicting a busy start to the summer travel season as an estimated 125,000 passengers will depart and arrive at the airport between Friday, May 23 and Tuesday, May 27. The Memorial Day weekend traditionally kicks-off the summer travel season.

Airlines serving RDU report strong bookings for the Memorial Day weekend. The busiest travel days will be Friday and Monday. Passengers are advised to give themselves plenty of time for parking, check-in and security checkpoint.

The vehicle inspection checkpoint, which was reinstated yesterday, is not expected to delay traffic coming into the airport. The checkpoint is in response to the threat level change from yellow to orange.

Summer Travel Tips

As families prepare for their summer vacations, airport officials offer passengers the following travel tips:

Limit carry-on items to one bag and one personal item.
Remember that all carry-on items, including strollers, child seats, diaper bags, blankets and toys, must go through security screening procedures.
Remove all sharp objects, such as pocketknives and pointed-tip scissors, from carry-on bags.
Follow the electronic signs for parking information. Signs in and around the airport will guide drivers to lots with available parking spaces.
Parents and legal guardians can make arrangements with airlines to escort children traveling unaccompanied by an adult to and from aircraft boarding gates. Otherwise, only ticketed passengers are allowed beyond security checkpoint. \
Put all undeveloped film and cameras with film and videotape in carry-on baggage. Checked baggage screening equipment will damage or destroy undeveloped film and recorded videos.
All fireworks and other hazardous materials are prohibited in checked and carry-on baggage. Some aerosol canisters are flammable. Consider using pump-sprays for suntan lotion, bug repellant, hair spray and other personal care products.
Clean sports equipment, such as golf clubs, of any fertilizers or other chemicals that may set off explosive detection equipment.
