Mother’s Day and Graduations Bring Traffic Increase of 23%

Airport Reports Busiest Month of the Year in April:

April was the busiest month of the year at RDU, with nearly 1.2 million passengers flying through the airport – a three percent increase over March and an 18 percent increase over April 2022.

“Spring break travel gave RDU another boost in passenger traffic in April,” said Michael Landguth, president and CEO of the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority. “As we approach Memorial Day and the even busier summer travel season, we could see numbers that rival the records the airport set in 2019.”

The combined traffic from Mother’s Day and graduation weekend brought 191,596 passengers through RDU from May 12th through May 15th. That total exceeded projections and represented a 28% increase over the same weekend last year.

West Coast Connection: RDU expanded connectivity to the West Coast when Breeze Airways began nonstop service to Los Angeles Wednesday. Breeze is the third airline to serve the L.A. market, along with American and Delta. The new route is the tenth city Breeze serves direct from RDU. The airline launched its first flight from RDU in February.

Team RDU Honored: Members of RDU’s fire, police and traffic control departments are being honored by Wake County EMS for their quick action in saving the life of an airport guest during a Code Blue call. The team used a defibrillator and performed CPR on a man who was found unresponsive in a restroom in Terminal 2, saving his life before Wake County EMS arrived. Law Enforcement Sgt. Steven Gabrielli, Law Enforcement Officer Brendan Horace, Law Enforcement Officer Keifer Salmon, Security Officer James Nowell, Fire Department Captain Mac Schultz, Fire Engineer Grant Huffman, Fire Engineer Jeremy Pace and Fire Engineer Bradford Dunn will be recognized at the Wake County EMS Code: Celebrate event in May.
