Safety Management System (SMS) at RDU
Safety is foundational to everything we do at Raleigh-Durham International Airport. The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority is committed to providing a safe environment for our employees, tenant business partners, guests and the general public.
The Airport Authority operates under a Safety Management System (SMS) — a proactive, organization-wide approach to identifying hazards, managing risk and continuously improving safety performance.
What is a Safety Management System?
A Safety Management System is a systematic approach to managing safety that emphasizes prevention, accountability and improvement. Rather than reacting only after something goes wrong, Safety Management Systems focuses on proactively identifying trends, hazards and risks early, and addressing them collaboratively.
RDU’s Safety Management System supports safe airport operations by encouraging reporting, analysis and shared responsibility across our airport community. Everyone who works at or operates at RDU plays a role in making the system effective.

Why Safety Management Matters
RDU’s Safety Management System does not replace existing regulations, oversight or safety procedures. Instead, it brings them together within a common framework that helps the Airport Authority and the entire RDU community work more effectively to address safety hazards and risks.
At RDU, safety is a shared responsibility. Our Safety Management System gives us the structure to support that responsibility — today and into the future.
