REAL ID at RDU

Are you REAL ID Ready? Enforcement began May 7, 2025. Your driver's license of state-issued ID must be a REAL ID to avoid additional screening for domestic flights. Find out how to get your REAL ID today at TSA.gov/REAL-ID

Travelers are now required to present a REAL ID or other federally approved identification, like a U.S. passport, to board commercial flights at RDU and airports across the U.S.

According to the U.S. Transportation Security Agency (TSA), passengers who don’t have acceptable identification can expect to face delays, additional screening and the possibility of not being allowed past the airport’s security checkpoint.

North Carolina residents can get a REAL ID at an N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles driver license office with the required documentation. A REAL ID is an identification card that looks like a traditional driver license or ID but has a star in the top right corner. Learn more about getting a REAL ID on the DMV website.

For travelers who don’t have a REAL ID or passport, TSA accepts several other forms of identity documents. Find a full list of acceptable alternate identification online at tsa.gov. The list is subject to change by TSA at any time, so passengers are encouraged to check online before they travel.
