Triangle Transit Rail Link to RDU

Located at the center of the Research Triangle Region, the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority is committed to working with surrounding communities to expand and implement new transit opportunities to support our region’s growth and economic development opportunities.

We’re proud to partner with Triangle Transit as they seek to develop a regional rail system of transit that will connect the communities of the Research Triangle Region to Raleigh-Durham International Airport. At first, projected ridership and demand indicate the need for a bus connection between RDU and the nearest planned metro rail station.

In the future, when demand and ridership warrants, the Airport Authority will take the lead in working with Triangle Transit and the Research Triangle Park to design, develop and construct a rail link directly from the airport.

Our long range plans include the building of a Consolidated Rental Car Facility, or CONRAC, on the west side of the airport. Recent findings from our land use study indicate this is likely to be located along Pleasant Grove Church Road.

This location will be an ideal place to link the airport with a regional rail system. We do not currently have a timeline for construction of a CONRAC. Once the decision to build the facility is made, it will take about five years for development, construction and completion.
