Volunteer Ambassadors

Volunteer Ambassadors provide passenger assistance and answer questions. Identified by red vests, RDU Volunteers can be found at the Information Desks in baggage claim and throughout the terminals working side by side with staff.

Established in 1997, Volunteer Ambassadors have contributed nearly 60,000 hours to RDU customers. Local, state and national organizations have recognized and honored several individual RDU volunteers for excellence.

Volunteer Skills
RDU Volunteer Ambassadors should be able to work well with people, assist others and possess good communication skills. We are looking for reliable and committed individuals who are physically able to meet the demands of working in a dynamic and spacious airport environment.

Volunteer duties include:

  • Responding to inquiries for flight information and assistance;
  • Providing directions to and from the airport to local tourist attractions and landmarks;
  • Providing information on accessing airport services and navigating the terminals and airport grounds;
  • Assisting RDU Airport Authority staff with special events;
  • Answering questions on transportation, hotel, dining, and shopping options;
  • Passing along customer comments.

Training to Become a Volunteer Ambassador
Providing exceptional customer service is an integral part of RDU’s vision. On-the-job training is provided in addition to a variety of on-going personal and professional enrichment programs throughout the year.

Each RDU Volunteer is required to complete an orientation session on flight schedules, airline gate assignments, passenger support service locations, airport facilities, airport emergency procedures, computer usage, tourism brochures, using the public address system and getting to know airline and tenant representatives. Volunteers are expected to gain a clear understanding of airport services in order to provide accurate and courteous service to customers.

Service Opportunities
Raleigh-Durham International Airport is open seven days a week, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, regardless of weather conditions. Volunteers are asked to donate four hours per shift on their scheduled days at least four times a month.

RDU’s three Visitor Services Information Desks operate:

  • 7 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., each day (including holidays and weekends)

Volunteer Benefits
In addition to the personal satisfaction of helping others, RDU Volunteer benefits include:

  • Discounts on airport gift or food items
  • Free parking in the employee parking lot
  • Special recognition functions and service awards
  • Door-to-door accidental injury insurance coverage
