RDU Terminals Change Names

Quick Facts:
When RDU's Terminal 2 opens on October 26, the airport will change the terminal names.

  • Terminal A will be renamed Terminal 1
  • Terminal 2 will replace Terminal C
  • Terminal C will be demolished to make way for the completion of Terminal 2

Why the change?
The opening of Terminal 2 provides the Airport Authority with the perfect opportunity to bring the names of RDU's terminal buildings in line with current international airport naming standards. It also ends questions about Terminal B, which was incorporated into Terminal A many years ago.

Isn't Terminal 2 just a renovation of Terminal C?
No. Terminal 2 is a completely new terminal from the ground up. In Fall 2005, the Terminal C North Concourse, along with a portion of the ticketing lobby, was demolished to make way for Terminal 2. What remains of Terminal C will be demolished shortly after Terminal 2 open. For more information on Terminal 2 click here.

Are any renovations planned for Terminal A?
Yes. The Airport Authority currently has plans to begin a major renovation of Terminal A beginning in 2011. Work would begin shortly after Terminal 2 is completed. In 2007, the Authority formed a project definition team to determine exactly what would be done to improve Terminal A.

Preliminary plans for Terminal A include:

  • A consolidation of services that will lead to one ticketing area, one security screening checkpoint and one baggage claim area.
  • Airline ticketing islands to ease lines and congestion in the terminal lobby
  • More electronic kiosks to speed up the check-in process
  • A large security checkpoint
  • In-line baggage screening system, removing the process of screening checked luggage from the terminal lobby
