Architecture
From the beginning, the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority’s goals for its new terminal were clear: create a building that was flexible and passenger-friendly, while reflecting the dynamic region the airport serves. Adopting the themes of hand made and mind made, architect Curt Fentress designed a terminal building that guides passengers intuitively from the curb to the gate, while using elements that recall the region’s history of craftsmanship and status as a leading area for technological advancement.
In-Line Baggage Screening
Terminal 2 features an innovative in-line baggage screening system that allows all checked luggage to be screened for explosives as it is transported through the airport’s baggage conveyor system. The system incorporates four large Explosive Detection System (EDS) machines, each weighing more than one ton a piece. RDU is one of the first airports in the country to build the in-line screening system into the terminal design. Due to building constraints, many airports around the country placed the large machines in their terminal lobbies when the TSA mandated the use of the machines following the events of September 11.
Resource Management Center
RDU’s Terminal 2 will feature a resource management center that will be responsible for controlling the movement of aircraft on the terminal ramp. As a common use facility, the Airport Authority is also responsible for managing the terminal gates, baggage claim carousels and ticket counter positions. Located in the terminal’s ramp control tower, personnel in the center will ensure the airport’s effective and efficient use of its resources. |
