Common Use
RDU’s Terminal 2 is a common use facility and is designed to function as a shared environment for many functions as opposed to each carrier having entirely its own assigned and exclusively used space. It also features one IT infrastructure over which all airline and tenant voice communication and data are transmitted.
Benefits of Common Use
- Maximizes terminal’s operational capacity by maintaining flexibility in assigning airline operations and minimizes the need for future expansion.
- Maximizes uitilization of space and centralizes maintenance and operation.
- Allows Authority to readily and efficiently manage and control use of the resources it has provided.
Contract
- IBM provides the common use IT infrastructure and check-in kiosks.
Resource Management Center
The Terminal 2 Resource Management Center is responsible for controlling the movement of aircraft on the terminal ramp. Since Terminal 2 is a common use facility, the Airport Authority is also responsible for managing the terminal gates, remote aircraft parking pads, baggage make up and baggage claim carousels and ticket counter positions. A contractor, TBI Airport Management, will operate the resource management center and will be located in the Terminal 2 ramp control tower.
In-line Baggage Screening
An in-line baggage screening system allows RDU to integrate Explosive Detection System machines (EDS), normally seen in airport terminal lobbies, with an airport’s behind-the-scenes baggage handling conveyor system. These systems rapidly move baggage from the counter, through screening areas where it is screened for explosives, and onto various departing aircraft. The in-line baggage screening is fully integrated into the airport’s baggage handling system.
International Travel Experience
Three international gates lead arriving passengers through a welcoming 800-ft corridor featuring the first of several art installations in the terminal. After clearing the Customs and Immigration area, which is capable of processing more than 400 people per hour, passengers arrive in baggage claim where they can simply ext the terminal with their luggage. An international arrivals waiting area is also located in the baggage claim area. |
