Fall 2008

On Oct. 26, the first phase of Terminal 2 officially opened. In the weeks prior, the Airport Authority hosted a series of pre-opening events, which included a breakfast for regional leaders and a community open house. To facilitate an easy transition from Terminal C to Terminal 2, a handful of flights arrived to Terminal 2 late on the evening of Oct. 25. Just 10 days after the new terminal opened, crews began demolishing Terminal C to make way for the second phase of Terminal 2.

U.S. Rep. David Price, chair of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, addresses elected officials, community leaders and RDU tenants at the Regional Leaders’ breakfast on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008.

More than 7,000 people from across the Research Triangle Region visited Terminal 2 on Saturday, Oct. 11 for a preview of the new facility. Crowds were greeted with live music, free samples from terminal shops and restaurants and a chance to see the new terminal’s international arrivals area, which is normally closed to the public.

Passengers from an American Airlines flight from Dallas are the first to step foot inside Terminal 2 late in the evening of Oct. 25. To facilitate an easy transition between Terminal C and Terminal 2, several flights arrived to the new terminal the night before its official opening.

Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority Board members Toni Lipscomb (center left) and Kim Frazier (center right) cut the ribbon to officially open Terminal 2 on Sunday, Oct. 26 as Chairman Michael Weeks (left) and Board Members Geoff Elting, Craigie Sanders and Robb Teer look on.

Just 10 days after Terminal 2 opened, demolition began on the former Terminal C. Here, the concourse is cut in half at the site of the former Hudson News store. The second phase of Terminal 2 will feature 13 new gates on the footprint of this building.

Construction workers shoot water from hoses through the façade of Terminal C to dampen debris from the building’s demolition to keep dust levels low. When the second phase of Terminal 2 is completed this area will be part of a grand central atrium that will enable daylight to reach the lower baggage claim level.
