RDU employees walk during a wellness eventAirport Authority Named One of Region’s Healthiest Employers

The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority was recently named the #4 Healthiest Employer in the Triangle by the Triangle Business Journal.

This recognition is something we’re very proud of!

RDU’s wellness program was started three years ago to raise awareness among our employees about the importance of making healthy choices. Healthy people make a healthy organization and we care about the overall health and well-being of our employees and their families. On top of that, we can see that the health of our people is directly linked to high-performance and sustainability.

At the Airport Authority, we aim to provide a healthy workplace to support a healthy, engaged, and high-performing workforce.

RDU’s wellness program addresses all areas of employee health, including:

  • Weight loss
  • Healthy eating
  • Physical activity
  • Smoking cessation
  • Cardiovascular health
  • Diabetes
  • Women’s and men’s health
  • Financial health
  • Mental health

These areas are addressed through seminars, workshops and other activities that are offered at a variety of times that accommodate varying staff schedules and allow for more participation.

We also offer both onsite and offsite fitness facilities and personal training and a variety of programs and activities to encourage staff participation at all levels of the health spectrum.

So, what difference has it made to our employees?

Many of our staff have embraced improving their health and have seen dramatic life changes such as weight loss, lower cholesterol and blood pressure numbers, drastic cuts to their healthcare costs, and improvements to their health risk assessment scores.

As staff members have witnessed other staff experiencing real results, they have begun believing that they, too, can improve their health. And we’re seeing results:

  • More than 90 percent of staff and dependents have participated at least one wellness activity each year.
  • We are experiencing an overall reduction in total number of health risk factors.

  • We have seen an increase in percentage of individuals considered to be low-risk, and a decrease in the percentage of individuals considered to be moderate- and high-risk over a three year period.
  • Reductions in medical and pharmacy claims and costs.
  • Higher employee satisfaction demonstrated by third party survey results.

We are continuing to improve our wellness program each year but we do believe that by making one healthy choice at a time, we are improving the lives of our employees and our organization. While we take pride in running the airport, don’t be surprised if the next time you are at RDU, see some of our staff running — literally — for their health.
