Media Filming at RDU
Raleigh-Durham International Airport is operated by the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority. However, many different entities including federal and state agencies, airlines, and other private leaseholders operate at RDU. Below are tips to help you best cover your story about RDU.
Media covering stories at RDU may park in the hourly and daily section of the parking garage between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 or in other public lots such as Observation Park, General Aviation or at the Airport Authority Building. Vehicles parked in unauthorized areas are subject to towing.
Live trucks are too tall to enter the garage. Media may park these in the Cell Phone Lot at the Airport Authority Building only and drive a smaller vehicle into the parking garage.
Live shots are permitted inside RDU facilities, including Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and the General Aviation Terminal only if cordless equipment is used. Cords are not permitted inside airport buildings or across pedestrian traffic areas.
The following locations are designated for live shots. On the terminal curbs, live trucks must be attended at all times. Contact Communications and Community Affairs for assistance, if needed.
- Cell Phone Lot (Airport Authority Building)
- Observation Park
- Terminal 1 curbside, before the canopy begins
- Terminal 2 Departures Curb (before or after the overhang canopy only)
- General Aviation Terminal Curb
- Contact Communications and Community Affairs to let us know you are on site
- Wear a media ID at all times
- Avoid setting up cameras/tripods in areas that impede pedestrian or traffic flow
- Identify yourself to passengers you select to interview
Only ticketed passengers are permitted through the security checkpoint. Filming of the checkpoint area is limited to the area prior to the checkpoint. We ask that security monitors not be filmed. For more information on filming at the checkpoint, contact the Transportation Security Administration’s Public Affairs Office.
Many areas of RDU are leased by state and federal agencies, private businesses and individuals. These include The Shops of RDU, private hangars and fixed-base operators, among others. Media must obtain permission from the leaseholder before filming in these locations.
