December 20, 2002 Click here for Regional Icon graphics Regional ICON Project The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority recently unveiled the preliminary drawings for a regional ICON that will be unveiled on December 17, 2003 to commemorate 100 years of powered flight. Designed by architect Wellington Reiter, the ICON will honor the Wright Brothers first flight on the beaches of North Carolina, while also representing our region’s vision and aspirations for the future. The sculpture will feature a 60’ tall tower, “V” shaped wings to connote flight and a large ring 120’ in length – the distance of the Wright Brothers first flight. The cities of Durham and Raleigh and the counties of Durham and Wake, along with the Airport Authority, will fund the project. The ICON will be located at the entrance to the airport’s parking garage, allowing visual access to all passengers entering the airport. The design shown here represents the general concept for the ICON. It will be designed to be in proportion to the surrounding structures. ### Raleigh-Durham
