RDU Receives
Award for Excellence in Architecture
RDU Airport,
NC - The Triangle chapter of the American Institute of Architects
presented the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority with the 2004 Triangle
Isosceles Award. The AIA awards committee recognized the Authority for
its sustained support of quality design in the Triangle Area. Airport
Director John Brantley and Airport Authority Chairman Tim Clancy accepted
the award on behalf of RDU at the regional AIA chapter's annual awards
ceremony held on Thursday, February 12.
In awarding RDU the
Isosceles Award, AIA named the following projects as examples of RDU's
commitment to architectural form and function:
Terminal
Area Parking Garages
Garage Architect: The Freelon Group
RDU's newest garages are located between the airport's terminals and
feature a unique helix design on the north and south ends to guide motorists
to the garage entrance and exits.
General
Aviation Terminal
Architect: The Freelon Group
Scheduled
to open on April 1, the GA terminal is the centerpiece of the airport's
redeveloped general aviation area. The design evokes flight and features

The cities
of Durham and Raleigh, counties of Durham and Wake and the Raleigh-Durham
Airport Authority sponsored this sculpture which features three primary
elements that evoke the spirit of invention and aspiration that inspired
Orville and Wilbur Wright to embark on the first powered flight.
The award is not the
first RDU has received for its development projects. In 2001, RDU received
an Award of Merit and the President's Award - Honorable Mention at the
International Parking Institute Design Awards. The awards recognized the
accessibility and aesthetics of the airport's parking garage. The first
phase of the garage opened in April 2000. The final phase opened this
past fall featuring over 6,000 additional parking spaces.
The Authority's next
major project is the reconstruction and redevelopment of Terminal C. The
design firm working on the project is Fentress Bradburn Architects of
Denver.
