Opens New Parking Garage
RDU Airport,
NC (November 19, 2003) - Raleigh-Durham International
Airport today opened its newest parking garage featuring nearly 6,200
parking spaces located within walking distance of the terminals.
RDU began planning
the garage after a passenger survey indicated that motorists wanted more
parking closer to the terminals. With more than 11,000 spaces now located
between the terminals, motorists will now be able to choose between the
parking garages and the park and ride lots. In the past, the limited number
of spaces located between the terminals meant that drivers had to use
the park and ride facilities.
New Parking
Entrance
With the opening of the new garage, all passengers parking within the
terminal area will enter at one entrance plaza. Electronic signs will
guide motorists to the new entrance, which is located just past the rental
car area before Terminal A. The current entrances to Terminal C will close.
Parking Rates
Parking rates for daily and hourly parking between the terminals will
remain unchanged throughout the holidays. All parking is $1 an hour. Daily
parking is $8 per day. Hourly parking is $24 per day. Signs at the entrance
plaza will guide motorists to hourly and daily parking.
Design
When designing the garage, RDU engineers focused on ease of use and safety.
Lighting and space are used to guide passengers to terminal walkways and
garage exits. The spacious design also emphasizes safety. The garage features
high-intensity lighting, open stairwells and glass-enclosed elevators.
A simple, color-coded
numbering system is used to help motorists find their vehicles. RDU encourages
drivers to write down where they park so they are able to find their car
easily when they return from their trip.
Exit Express
Today RDU will also launch Exit Express, a new way to pay for parking.
Exit Express is an automated payment program that calculates the parking
fee, accepts payment and validates the parking ticket. The driver then
inserts the ticket at the exit plaza. Pay stations are located along pedestrian
walkways between the terminals and the parking garage.
To use the new program,
drivers must remember to keep their tickets with them to pay for parking
before returning to their cars. Exit Express ambassadors will be located
at the pay stations to introduce the new program to customers. Ambassadors
will be wearing blue Exit Express baseball caps.
Park and Ride
Lots
Park and Ride lots 3 and 4 will remain open for passengers who want to
use the remote lots. Additional park and ride lots will open during the
holiday season as demand dictates. Park and Ride 3 is $5 per day and Park
and Ride 4 is $4 per day.
