RDU Gears Up for July 4 Holiday Rush
RDU Airport, NC (July 2, 2003) - Officials at Raleigh-Durham International Airport are preparing for a busy July 4 holiday weekend with over 80,000 passengers expected to travel through the airport beginning this afternoon through Monday, July 7. Passengers are reminded to give themselves plenty of time to park, check-in with their airline and proceed through security checkpoint.
To ensure security checkpoint moves as quickly as possible, the Airport Authority and the Transportation Security Administration recently added one additional security lane at each checkpoint -- just in time for the Independence Day holiday. These additional lanes will open during peak travel periods. The busiest travel days of the holiday weekend will be Thursday, July 3 and Monday, July 7.
Passengers driving to the airport are reminded to watch the electronic signs, which provide information on available parking.
Travel Tips
As passengers prepare for their holiday travel, airport officials offer the following tips:
- Limit carry-on items to one bag and one personal item.
- Don’t forget your government-issued photo ID.
- Remember that all carry-on items, including strollers, child seats, diaper bags, blankets and toys, must go through security screening procedures.
- Remove all sharp objects, such as pocketknives and pointed-tip scissors, from carry-on bags.
- Place all metal objects, including keys and cell phones, in carry-on luggage to facilitate the screening process.
- Leave fireworks at home or buy them when you arrive at your destination. Fireworks are not allowed in checked or carry-on luggage for safety reasons.
- Keep holiday family photos protected by packing any undeveloped film in carry-on bags. Checked baggage screening equipment will damage or destroy undeveloped film.
- Clean sports equipment, such as golf clubs, of any fertilizers or other chemicals that may set off explosive detection equipment.
