RDU
Ends Random Vehicle Searches
RDU AIRPORT,
NC (April 17, 2003) - The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority today
closed its random vehicle inspection checkpoint. The changes are in response
to the Homeland Security Department’s lowering of the national terror
threat level to yellow. The Authority received the directive from the
TSA today.
The airport will also reopen
access to the airport’s terminals from the I-70/Lumley Road entrance.
The airport began the random
vehicle inspections on March 19. The TSA, the agency responsible for aviation
security, currently requires RDU to conduct random searches of vehicles
approaching the terminals when the Homeland Security terror threat level
is at orange or above. Signage placed throughout the terminals reminding
passengers to report unattended packages will also be removed.
