RDU braces for busy Memorial Day Weekend

RDU Airport, NC --- Airport officials are expecting heavy traffic at Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) this Memorial Day weekend and are reminding travelers to give themselves plenty of time to catch flights.

Smart travelers will get to the airport at least two hours before their scheduled flight this weekend," RDU spokesman Mike Blanton recommended. Today and Monday are expected to be the heaviest travel days.

Airport officials also suggest that passengers parking at RDU go directly to Park and Ride 4 on the North end of the airport across from the cargo facilities. To avoid traffic near the Terminals, travelers are encouraged to access Park and Ride 4 from I-540 and U.S. Highway 70 instead of I-40.

Park and Ride 4 is the airport's largest lot with a capacity of 4,500 paved spaces. Through the first four months of this year, passenger traffic at Raleigh-Durham International Airport was running 27 percent higher than last year. RDU was ranked as the second fastest growing major airport in the country last year and is expecting another record setting year in 2000.
