The Airport Authority has begun pre-construction work on a $68 million project to renovate and modernize the central portion of Terminal 1, which opened in 1981. Construction is expected to begin in Spring 2012.
During construction, the section being modernized will be closed. During this time, AirTran Airways and Southwest Airlines will operate from the building's north end. Work is expected to take about 2 years. The project includes:
An inline bag handling system
Larger security checkpoint that is easier to navigate
Pre-security concession space
New concourse exit area and meet and greet space
New exterior building design
Introduction of higher ceilings in the ticketing and bag claim areas
Use of glass and translucent material to allow more natural light in the building
Addition of canopy over the shuttle bus drop-off/pick-up curbside
Terminal 1 will be home to Southwest Airlines and potentially other low-cost carriers once work is complete. The Airport Authority has not yet made a decision on the future of the north and south sections of Terminal 1 once construction is complete.
