Second Phase of Terminal 2 Takes Shape
Travelers began using part of the second phase of Terminal 2 on Wednesday, August 4, when the airport opened the permanent corridor that passengers will use when exiting the concourse.
The corridor is the first section of the terminal's second phase to open. Terminal 2 is one building being constructed in two phases, with the first opening in October 2008 and the remainder set to open on Jan. 23, 2011. |

RDU Experiencing Strong Summer Travel Season
Each day this summer, more than 20,000 travelers are passing through the terminals at Raleigh-Durham International Airport. But, an even more telling number is that load factors have soared to nearly 90 percent, reaching record levels.
Load Factors
A load factor is an industry term for the percentage of seats on a flight that are filled. It helps both airlines and airports determine how certain routes are doing. RDU uses load factors as one indication for targeting air service recruitment toward specific destinations, routes and even times of day. |
Airport Authority Receives Kudos For Financial Reporting
In June, the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority was awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the U.S. and Canada.
The honor was based upon the Airport Authority's Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2009. The honor demonstrates the Airport Authority's willingness to demonstrate its financial health to the public by producing more in-depth reports than required. |

RDU Moves Toward Future
Letter from the Chairman
Summer's 100-plus degree heat isn't slowing things down at RDU. Every day seems to bring changes to Terminal 2 as we continue to anticipate its opening. We reached another milestone in this project as the first part of the building, the permanent exit corridor, opened in early August. |
Airport Reaches Out To Customers Through Initiatives
From online to in the terminals, RDU is reaching out, engaging customers and getting them involved in the airport's business. In the process, customers are learning more about the airport, the opportunities available to them and how they can become involved with the airport.
In the Terminals
This summer, RDU partnered with The Shops of RDU for several customer events called The First Friday Series. Each first Friday of the month from June through August included entertainment, coupons and giveaways on the concourse of each terminal. |

Artwork Commissioned For International Arrivals
Triangle Area Sister Cities recently commissioned a new artwork designed specifically for RDU's international arrivals bag claim area in Terminal 2. The piece was enthusiastically accepted by the Airport Authority Board during its July meeting.

Full Flights Signal Strong Demand
Airport Director Editorial
The summer weather to this point has been hot, and air travel has been hot as well. Through the first half of the year, the number of passengers flying to and from RDU is slightly ahead of 2009, but due to continuing reduction by the airlines in the number of flights and available seats, the percentage of seats filled has reached record levels. In June, nearly 87 percent of the seats on scheduled flights departing RDU and nearly 84 percent of those on arriving flights were filled, both all-time records for any month at RDU. Air cargo also has been on the move, its volume increasing by 12 percent versus last year. |
On Duty: Traffic Control
On the hottest of days or the wettest of evenings, RDU Traffic Control Officers (TCO) can be found on duty in front of the airport's two terminals. More than just traffic enforcers, these dedicated employees are committed to keeping the airport safe and providing excellent customer service. |
