Midwest Arrives, LAX on the Horizon

On Thursday, April 1, passengers arriving on Midwest Airlines Flight 1640 were greeted by a standing ovation as they entered Terminal 2 when the airline returned to RDU. The airline will offer two daily departures to Milwaukee on 76-seat Embraer-170 aircraft.

“We are excited to welcome Midwest back to RDU,” said Teresa Damiano, RDU's director of marketing. “The two regions share synergies between government, education and technology.”

Midwest Airlines has served RDU twice previously with non-stop service to its Milwaukee hub. The airline operated at RDU from 1998-2001 as Midwest Connect. It relaunched service in 2007 but discontinued it in 2008 due to high fuel costs.

In 2009, Midwest Airlines was acquired, along with Frontier Airlines, by Republic Airways Holdings. Republic announced on April 13 that it is rebranding both Midwest and Frontier under the Frontier brand. The new combined airline now provides RDU passengers with one-stop service to dozens of destinations in the Midwest and along the West Coast through its Milwaukee hub.

Frontier will begin phasing out the Midwest Airlines brand later this year. Frontier-painted planes could be servicing the route as soon as this summer, with sign changes and the official name change occurring at RDU by the end of 2010.

Delta to Resume LA Service
Delta Airlines announced on March 13 that it will resume nonstop service to Los Angeles beginning Thursday, June 10. The flight will operate Sunday through Friday on the airline's 148-seat Airbus 320.

“RDU is excited to welcome back service to Los Angeles,” said RDU's Director of Marketing Teresa Damiano. “LA is a major metropolitan city with which our region has strong business and leisure ties, which is evidenced by the more than 250,000 people who travel between LA and the Research Triangle Region each year.”

Delta offered service to Los Angeles from June 2006 through January 2008. The airline discontinued service due to escalating fuel costs and schedule changes.

More New Service Arrives
On May 1, JetBlue added two daily flights to Boston, for a total of three daily departures. Southwest began service to St. Louis on May 9 and added one additional daily flight each to Baltimore and Chicago.
