RDU Receives High Marks From FAA

No discrepancies. That's as close as an airport can get to receiving an A plus from the Federal Aviation Administration. It's also the score RDU received during a recent three-day certification inspection.

In early September, the FAA's Airport Division examined RDU's runways, airfield, record-keeping, emergency services and fuel facilities as part of an annual certification inspection required of any airport with regularly scheduled commercial service.

Airport Authority Turns Focus To Terminal 1

The gleaming steel beams of the second phase of Terminal 2 are in place, signifying that the project is nearing final completion. Meanwhile, the Airport Authority is beginning to plan for renovations to Terminal 1.

It’s Electric: Changes in Store for Aircraft Ground Support Vehicles

It's one of those experiences that is part of the air travel experience — standing at the concourse windows and watching a number of strange-looking vehicles service airplanes sitting at the gate in between flights.

At RDU, big changes are coming for many of these vehicles. The Airport Authority recently decided that it's time for the vehicles to go electric.

RDU Expanding Environmental Efforts

With more than 5,000 acres, the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority is continuing to expand and improve its stewardship of environmental resources at RDU. Specific efforts target recycling, energy use and water conservation.

On Duty: RDU Law Enforcement

In most cases, the tens of thousands of passengers and visitors passing through RDU each day will never interact with members of RDU's Law Enforcement Department, otherwise known as RDU Police. But, the 70 full- and part-time men and women that comprise the department are on duty, ready to assist and protect the airport and its passengers.

“We have a different approach to law enforcement,” said Police Chief Donna Waters, who has been with the Airport Authority for 10 years. “Being in an airport environment, we have a higher amount of face-to-face public contact as well as a greater security mission. Therefore, our goal is to ensure safety and security while providing great customer service to our passengers.”

RDU Makes Gains in Customer Service

More than 500 customers recently told the Airport Authority exactly what they think about RDU during a recent customer satisfaction survey — and the airport was pleased to hear it. The survey also provided the Airport Authority its first official assessment of Terminal 2.

Progress is Happening at RDU

Letter from the Chairman

From the milestone of completing Phase I of Terminal 2 to a major renovation of Terminal 1, things are happening at RDU. We are also working toward becoming a better steward of the environment and planning for the long range aviation needs of our region.

Better Days in Sight for RDU

Airport Director Editorial

In late 2007, the volume of U.S. air travel began to soften. By the spring of 2008, most large airlines were reducing their capacity by eliminating flights, or announcing their impending elimination, thereby taking seats out of the skies, while their regional carrier affiliates ended service to smaller communities and replaced many mainline flights. Airplanes began being parked in the desert, both old and fuel inefficient, as well as new models. The rapid increase in fuel prices beginning in the early summer of 2008 and continuing through the fall and the financial industry crisis that became widespread in the late summer greatly accelerated this activity.

Airport Authority Notes

Southwest Airlines is adding one daily flight between RDU and Orlando. The flight is expected to begin in Spring 2010.
