The topping out of Terminal 2 signaled that the project was moving toward final completion. As this project begins to wind down, we're beginning to look toward the future on both the construction and environmental fronts.
When Terminal 2 opens in 2011, we'll turn our attention to the east side of the airport with a major renovation of Terminal 1. While the final scope hasn't been determined at this point, the project will be a major investment in the transportation infrastructure of our region.
Our goal is to reshape the venerable building into a modern facility that is positioned to meet the transportation needs of this region for years to come. We are looking to consolidate operations toward the central section of the terminal to further elevate the experience our passengers have while traveling through our airport.
We're also looking to strengthen our responsibility to the environment. Our new ground service vehicle policy will help reduce emissions and improve the quality of the work environment for hundreds of ground crews here at RDU by reducing exhaust fumes on our ramp areas.
Also, we're expanding the airport's recycling program, which is allowing us to divert much more waste from area landfills back into use by consumers. Reducing energy consumption and costs is another focus area, with our shift to LED lighting across the airport, both on the airfield and along our streets and in our parking structures.
Finally, we're continuing our strategic planning efforts to determine the best course for RDU to follow to meet the growing aviation needs of the Research Triangle Region as we head into the next decade. We look forward to the opportunities the future affords this airport and region. |
