Board Highlights
August
- The board voted to allow an expansion of Gordon Biersch into vacant space next to its existing location on the Terminal 2 concourse. The restaurant is frequently full during heavy travel times and needs the additional space to accommodate diners. Construction on the expansion is set to begin in January 2010. In the same action, the board voted to replace the Tequileria restaurant concept for Concourse D with Vintage Carolina, a wine bar featuring North Carolina wines and organic fare.
September
- The board approved a $230,000 agreement with Artist Mei-Ling Hom for a sculpture to hang over two gate areas on Concourse D of Terminal 2 when the facility opens in Winter 2011. The artwork is called Cloudscape and consists of about 50 wire mesh clouds in different shapes and heights. Click here for more on Art at the Airport.
- The board awarded a $192,000 contract to e-Plus technology for a virtualization solution for the Airport Authority. The implementation of this technology will allow for the consolidation of equipment within the Airport Authority’s two main data centers. It will provide cost savings, a more reliable server environment and will sustain future growth.
- The board approved concept changes for concessions in Terminal 2. In Phase II of the project, the space formerly announced as A Southern Season will now be Brighton Collectibles. Also, the kiosk space formerly announced as Godiva will now be held by Pylones, a French concept known for its twists on everyday objects.
October
- The Airport Authority Board approved construction of the USO Center in Terminal 2. The 3,200 sq. ft. Center will be twice the size of the Terminal 1 Center and feature a kitchen area, great room, computer kiosk, restrooms, changing rooms, children's play room and administration area. RDU, in partnership with USO North Carolina, opened its first Center in August 2004. Since that time, the Center has welcomed more than 125,000 military service men and women and their families.
- Board members officially received the Nello L. Teer Award for Excellence in Transportation Construction by the N.C. Transportation Hall of Fame during an event in October at the N.C. Transportation Museum in Spencer. The annual award recognizes transportation-related projects that are both very visible and reflect high quality design and construction with this year's award recognizing Terminal 2.
- The board was informed that Signature Art was installed in the Heritage Room of Terminal 2. The glass art is comprised with about 5,000 digitally-etched signatures gathered during the Terminal 2 Open House last year. Click here to read more on this artwork.
