After 34 years of service to Raleigh-Durham International Airport, longtime airport director John Brantley is retiring this November. Brantley was originally scheduled to retire in July; however, he agreed to stay on as the RDU Board of Directors completed its search for a new director.
Brantley began his aviation career with the Federal Aviation Administration nearly 45 years ago. He joined the Airport Authority as an engineering assistant in 1977. One of his first tasks was to help reshape and launch a long-range plan that included the development of the 10,000-foot runway adjacent to today's Terminal 2.
With John Brantley's upcoming retirement as director of Raleigh-Durham International Airport, Research Triangle area leaders offer their own tributes to him and his legacy of service to the region.
On October 10, the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority Board of Directors announced the appointment of Michael Landguth as the next director of Raleigh-Durham International Airport.
Landguth has served for the past seven years as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport Authority in Tennessee.
At the end of November, we mark the closing of a volume in the history of Raleigh-Durham International Airport. John Brantley, who has served as airport director at RDU since 1977, is retiring after a long and honorable career.
RDU now offers a way to fly right through garage parking at the airport. RDU PASSPORT allows parking customers to enjoy quick, ticketless access to more than 11,000 spaces in the parking garage between Terminals 1 and 2.
Along with ticketless access, customers are also billed automatically and receive electronic receipts. RDU PASSPORT users can park in either daily or hourly parking in the garage.
RDU today is a much different airport than it was at the turn of the century. Likewise, the Triangle region it serves also has undergone considerable change during the same period. Change has brought about many positives, many opportunities, but some negatives as well. What lies ahead for both region and airport isn't known, but there is a far greater probability of the road ahead being one that charts progress, not regression.
Raleigh-Durham International Airport is partnering with Wake Technical Community College to make the airport's firearms range available for the continuing education needs of professional law enforcement officers.
Beginning Sunday, June 3, 2012, Southwest Airlines will launch a new daily non-stop flight to Houston's Hobby Airport. The flight will operate seven days a week and will provide conveniently timed connections to Dallas's Love Field airport.
