WINTER 2008

RDU’s Newest Terminal to be Named Terminal 2

Terminal 2 has been chosen as the name for RDU’s new 900,000 square foot terminal, which will open later this year. With the opening, Terminal A will also get a new name: Terminal 1. The change will put an end to the persistent question, “Where is Terminal B?” and signals the beginning of a major redevelopment of RDU’s oldest terminal.

Airport Director Editorial

In 2007, more than 10 million passengers traveled through RDU, marking only the second time in its history the airport has exceeded this number. During the year, RDU also welcomed two new airlines, the return of United and more than 30 new flights.

Southwest Airlines to Launch Service to Denver
Southwest Airlines kicked off the New Year by announcing new nonstop service between RDU and Denver International Airport. From Denver, the flight continues to San Jose, a top destination for Research Triangle region business travelers. The airline’s announcement begins 2008 much like 2007 ended, with airlines announcing service to destinations at the top of RDU travelers’ lists.

Airport Expands Recycling Program
On January 1, RDU implemented the latest phase of its airport-wide recycling program. Airlines, restaurants and other airport tenants can now easily recycle more items including cardboard, newspapers, magazines and aluminum cans. The new program could nearly double the amount of recyclable materials collected at the airport.

New Taxi Service Lands at RDU
In 2003, RDU launched a taxicab program that introduced new taxis, new standards and a management system that ensured improved customer service. Recently, the Airport Authority awarded a contract to RDU Taxi Inc. to ensure the program’s continued success. The company will employ the latest technology and management systems, while providing more ownership opportunities for taxi drivers.
