RDU’s Newest Terminal to Be Named Terminal 2

Terminal 2 has been chosen as the name for RDU’s new 900,000 square foot terminal, which will open later this year. With the opening, Terminal A will get a new name: Terminal 1. The change will put an end to the persistent question, “Where is Terminal B?”

RDU Airport Director John Brantley announced the new terminal names at the November meeting of the Airport Authority. The announcement was about more than name changes. With the opening of Terminal 2, the RDU passenger experience will change. The focus will then turn to Terminal A.

Terminal 2 will open later this year.

Last year, the Airport Authority formed a project definition team to lay the groundwork for a major redevelopment of Terminal A. The primary objective of the team was to develop a plan for consolidating operations that would create one location for all airline check in, security screening and baggage claim.

Redevelopment plans for Terminal A mirror many of the major elements of Terminal 2, including:

  • Airline ticketing islands to ease lines and congestion in the terminal lobby
  • More electronic kiosks to speed up the check-in process.
  • Large security checkpoint.
  • In-line baggage screening system, removing the process of screening checked luggage from the terminal lobby.

RDU staff will present the findings of the project definition team at the February meeting of the Airport Authority.
