Airport Expands Recycling Program

On January 1, RDU implemented the latest phase of its airport-wide recycling program. Airlines, restaurants and other airport tenants can now easily recycle more items including cardboard, newspapers, magazines and aluminum cans. The new program could nearly double the amount of recyclable materials collected at the airport.

To simplify the recycling process, the Airport Authority built two trash chutes in Terminal A. The chutes streamline the process for recycling materials and disposing of trash. The Airport Authority also purchased a container delivery truck to support the new program.

RDU implemented the latest phase of its airport-wide recycling program.

In 2007, the Airport Authority recycled approximately 100 tons of office paper, cardboard, newspaper, magazines and aluminum cans. Under the new program, these materials as well as plastic bottles, glass containers, tin food containers, junk mail and telephone directories will be collected for recycling.

The expanded recycling program is part of a new waste management program developed by the Airport Authority last year. In addition to the chutes constructed in Terminal A, the Authority also built its own consolidated waste facility to increase the efficiency of waste and recycling collection and handling, while reducing disposal costs.

The Airport Authority maintenance department was also reorganized to support the new efforts. A new section, Recycling and Collections, was created to manage the movement of trash and recycling dumpsters seven days a week.

In February, new recycling receptacles will be placed near trash cans in public areas of the terminals to increase the airport’s ability to capture recyclable materials from the general public.
