RDU Law Enforcement Adds Technological Enhancements to Improve Traveler Safety

As part of a collaborative program with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP), RDU’s police officers now have use of Mobile Data Terminals, or MDTs, in some of their patrol cars. MDTs are essential tools for enhancing operational efficiencies, effectiveness and officer safety.

The in-car computers give officers immediate access to important databases such as the Division of Criminal Information and the State Bureau of Investigation. The computers allow officers to run registration, driver’s license and vehicle serial number information. Additionally, the officer gains access to the national data base controlled by the FBI.

Currently when not using the computers, officers need to call into the airport’s central communications center to check or verify a driver’s information. While this system is effective, the computers free up time for the busy central communications personnel and give officers a faster response time.

The in-car computers are another step in delivering good policing by ensuring officers have the necessary information to manage and resolve situations in real time.

Also, watch out speed demons. RDU’s police department has installed a new radar system in cars that is top of the line for speed enforcement. This system gives officers the ability to track speed in both directions and leads to better traffic enforcement. In the end this gives travelers a better traffic flow as they drop off or pick up friends and family.
