Southwest Airlines to Launch Service to Denver

Southwest Airlines kicked off the New Year by announcing new nonstop service between RDU and Denver International Airport. From Denver, the flight continues to San Jose, a top destination for the region’s business travelers. The airline’s announcement begins 2008 much like 2007 ended, with airlines announcing service to destinations at the top of RDU travelers’ lists.

Southwest Airlines announced RDU’s new flight as part of a list of 40 new roundtrip flights in key growth markets such as Denver. The airline’s service between RDU and Denver begins May 10.

In an air service study conducted by the Airport Authority in 2005, Denver was identified as one of the top three domestic destinations for which nonstop service could be supported. In April 2007, United Airlines began service to Denver. With Southwest’s announcement, west bound travelers will have two options for daily nonstop service to the mile high city.

Estimates show that approximately 400 passengers travel between RDU and Denver each day. The Triangle region and Denver are home to similar business leaders in the finance, high-tech and healthcare sectors.

In 2007, other new cities were added to RDU’s roster of nonstop destinations including Bentonville, AK; Birmingham; Jacksonville FL; Kansas City, MO; Louisville; Milwaukee; New Orleans and San Antonio.

Throughout January and February, airlines serving RDU will also begin addition service to Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, while Delta Airlines will begin weekly service to Cancun.
