RDU USO Sends Help To New Orleans

Carol Palmer of RDU's USO went to the New Orleans area in the wake of Hurricane Katrina to assist in the set-up of a new USO at Belle Chase Naval Air Base. For three weeks in October, Palmer manned a mobile food canteen by day and staffed the new USO at night. The canteen is a kitchen on wheels with a big television and speakers mounted on the outside. It is designed to serve 400 meals at a time and provides much-needed entertainment to the National Guard and private contractors who are supporting devastated areas.

During her stay, Palmer helped deliver more than 2,500 USO care packages and served more than 10,000 hotdogs. She noted that while the days were long — 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. — the reward of knowing that she made a difference made it all worthwhile.

The new USO center at Belle Chase continues to serve the thousands of servicemen and civilians living in tents at the air base. It is equipped with Xboxes and other forms of entertainment and at night the mobile canteen is set up to watch TV and movies.

Carol Palmer said the most memorable moment took place in Venice, LA, about two hours south of New Orleans, in an area of complete devastation. She witnessed 20 National Guardsmen hold up a huge American flag while members of the local fire department raised it up the flagpole by the remains of their fire station. The majesty of the moment coupled with the sense of pride these people felt in their country was something she will not soon forget.

The Corner has been very busy since its Thanksgiving opening. One key to its success is likely the quality of the coffee beverages. You can smell the aroma of roasted coffee beans as you approach the new venue in Terminal A — and that is just the beginning.

The Corner gets its coffee from local coffee roaster Robbie Roberts and his Joe Van Gogh coffee service. According to Roberts, the key to great coffee is to keep it fresh. All of the coffee beverages served at The Corner are made from coffee beans that were roasted that week and ground right before brewing. This is the key to producing a premier hot coffee.

Coffee served at The Corner comes from local roasters.

Roberts has been in the coffee business since 1991 and offers his Joe Van Gogh coffee at the Cup A Joe coffee shops in Chapel Hill and Hillsborough as well as RDU. The coffee beans are from around the world but roasted locally.

The Corner has its own Corner blend in regular and decaffeinated as well as an espresso blend in regular and decaffeinated. Travelers can purchase a wide variety of freshly brewed coffee beverages including café lattes, espressos and cappuccinos.
