Cheers! Go RDU to Heathrow Nonstop

American Airlines recently announced that it will switch its RDU to London service from Gatwick Airport to Heathrow Airport. The service will begin on March 29, 2008.

In its announcement of the new service, officials with American Airlines noted that the change was “a distinct vote of confidence and commitment to Raleigh/Durham’s London route.”

The flight to Heathrow will make RDU one of only a little more than a dozen American cities that offer nonstop flights to the airport. American will continue to fly to London using its three-class Boeing 777 aircraft with 245 seats.

Heathrow provides hundreds of convenient worldwide connections beyond London through its Oneworld Alliance partners. In addition, it is considered the preferred London airport, especially for business travelers, due to its proximity to downtown London.

Heathrow is the world’s busiest international airport. Ninety airlines offer service from the airport, serving over 180 destinations in more than ninety countries. The service change comes as part of the “open skies” agreement between the United States and the European Union which takes affect next year. American Airlines began offering service from RDU to London's Gatwick Airport in May 1994.

RDU Key to Regional Growth

The Research Triangle Region is nationally recognized as one of the most dynamic and globally competitive regions in the world. Recently, our region was named #1 Business Climate by Site Selection magazine, #1 Best Place to Live by Money magazine and #4 Strongest Economy by Policom Corp./Site Selection. As the airport that serves this region, RDU continues to grow and expand service to support our area.

“Our region has experienced phenomenal economic growth,” said Charles A. Hayes, president and CEO of the Research Triangle Regional Partnership (RTRP) in the economic development organization’s 2007 State of the Research Triangle Region report. “Our region’s economy is becoming stronger and much-better positioned to compete globally for jobs and investments.”

One of the 'high-impact results' credited with the growth in the State of the Research Triangle Region report is aggressive recruitment of new air service led by the Airport Authority. In the Authority’s latest air service study, completed in 2005, additional air service emerged as the number one priority of CEOs who serve on the region’s economic development planning committee.

In the last two years, RDU has added three new airlines and welcomed the return of United Airline’s mainline service. Ten new destinations have been added to the airport’s roster and the number of passengers traveling through RDU has increased approximately five percent over 2006. With the upcoming opening of the new terminal in summer 2008, RDU is poised to grow at a pace equal to that of the region.

The correlation between regional growth and the growth of RDU is an easy one. People tend to move places with economic opportunity. As more people and companies relocate to our region, the demand for air service grows. The future looks bright for the region and RDU.
