Gearing Up for Summer Travel Means Checking Your Paperwork

It is that time of year when summer vacationers fill the terminals at RDU. Travelers should be aware that new travel document rules have been issued. Before flying to your vacation destination, make sure your paperwork is in order.

One of the major things travelers should be aware of is the changes in passport rules. The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) requirements for air travel took effect on January 23, 2007. WHTI was mandated by Congress to strengthen border security and facilitate entry into the United States for citizens and legitimate international visitors.

If you are renewing your passport, plan to do it a few months prior to your trip.

Due to the increased number of passport requests in response to the WHTI, passport processing times have increased. For anyone who has applied but not yet received a passport, and is planning on traveling to Canada, Mexico, Panama, Bermuda or countries of the Caribbean, there is hope. The State Department is allowing people to re-enter the country through Sept. 30, 2007 as long as they have government-issued photo identification and Department of State official proof of passport application.

While this accommodation should be helpful to those awaiting their passport, it does not mean that Americans are exempt from meeting the entry requirements of Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or countries in the Caribbean region, some of which require a passport, certified birth certificate, or other evidence of citizenship for entry. In addition, after Sept. 30, 2007, everyone will need a passport in order to re-enter the country. For more information visit, visit travel.state.gov.

Also, keep in mind the new regulations about liquids and gels. Any gel, liquid or aerosols brought as carry-on must be in three-ounce (or less) bottles. These bottles must be stored in one, clear, plastic bag that can be zipped at the top. Exceptions include medicines and young child and baby necessities such as formula and other essentials, Passengers will be asked to remove this bag at security for x-ray examination. For further details, visit www.tsa.gov.
