Terminal C: South Concourse Redevelopment Moves Forward

The Triangle community is eagerly awaiting the arrival of the new Terminal C, which will transform the former American Airlines hub into a modern facility and become the home to many of the airlines serving RDU. Significant new features include greatly expanded check-in, security checkpoint and baggage claim areas.

The RDU Airport Authority identified the redevelopment and expansion of Terminal C as a viable alternative to a more costly and lengthy terminal development project developed in the mid-1990s. The new Terminal C will be able to accommodate up to 13 million passengers a year; in 2005, RDU had 9.4 million passengers pass through both terminals.

Due to the Authority's solid financial outlook, in February 2006 the RDU Authority Board signaled its intent to replace the south concourse in concurrence with the current Terminal C project. In June, the Board authorized the establishment of an initial project budget of $2.1 million for the Terminal C south concourse replacement. The funds cover architectural, engineering and other design services and project management and support costs.

The south concourse is where American, American Eagle, United Express and Air Canada currently operate. When the north concourse is complete in mid-2008, these airlines will move into the new facility, along with Delta.

Also in June, the Board approved proceeding with the issuance of $300 million in variable rate bonds that will be used to fund a substantial portion of Terminal C. The bond sale was the culmination of a process that started over a year ago when RDU entered a swap transaction that locked in low, long term fixed interest rates.

As a gateway to the Research Triangle Region, Terminal C will reflect the dynamic communities the airport serves. The architecture combines glass, steel and wood to bring indoors the natural landscape of North Carolina 's Piedmont region. The project will be completed in phases between mid-2008 and 2010.
