According to Delta, bookings for the new flight, which leaves RDU at 6:55 p.m. Sunday through Friday, are very strong. The return flight, which leaves LAX at 10:30 p.m. local time and arrives at RDU at 6 a.m., also boasts positive numbers.
Conversations with passengers on the first flight backs up the data that new service is a welcome addition and will be a part of RDU's nonstop destination city list for a long time to come. “Now that there's a nonstop flight, I plan to go to Los Angeles more often,” said one passenger who was planning to visit family.
The community and RDU have long recognized the need for additional nonstop service to the West Coast. In a May 2005 air service study, Los Angeles was ranked as the number one destination not served by nonstop service, with approximately 375,000 people traveling to the area each year.
The flight connects RDU not only with a major metropolitan area, but offers several fast connections to Asia through Delta's codeshare partners, such as China Airlines. Coming back to RDU at 6 a.m., Delta offers connections to several major cities on the east coast such as New York and Boston, arriving by 8 a.m.
The Airport Authority is grateful to several organizations for supporting the new service. First, Delta's decision to offer transcontinental service is applauded by the Research Triangle Region. Capitol Broadcasting Company, owner of WRAL-TV and WRAZ-TV (FOX), and WRAL-FM radio, provided advertising to promote the new service, greatly increasing community awareness of the new flight.
Finally, thanks go to the North Carolina Commerce's Division of Tourism, Film and Sports for providing additional support and awareness for the service in North Carolina and California through many different vehicles, including their www.visitnc.com Web site.
