The International Parking Institute has chosen RDU’s Parking Garage 4 for the Award of Merit in the category titled Best Design of a Parking Facility with 800 or more spaces. The Award of Merit is the second highest recognition offered in this competition.

Parking Garage 4 is the latest addition to the Airport Authority’s terminal area parking garage and is located in the middle of the complex. It provides 6,165 spaces for hourly and daily parking. The parking facility was designed to enhance the airport patron’s parking experience incorporating safety, security and convenience in an easily accessible environment.

The garage incorporates two of the circular helixes that are the hallmark of the new parking facility. The helixes provide vertical circulation between floors and are designed with internally illuminated fabric structures to accent their location and visibility.

The Airport Authority is proud that its newest parking facility received industry accolades for its design. Its distinctive design has made it a symbol for the look of the future at RDU.

Airport Director John Brantley and board chairman Steve Toler presented Dave Heinl, outgoing CEO of the Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau, with a framed caricature at the March 2007 Airport Authority board meeting. Heinl is retiring in April.

The caricature of Heinl features milestones of his work with RDU: the American Airlines hub opening; the arrival of the London flight; and the Bureau's support to gain service from RDU to London, Bermuda and Canada.
