No Good Deed Goes Unnoticed
RDU Volunteer Jim Van Strien meets
President and more...

When he signed up to be a RDU Volunteer Ambassador in 2001, Jim Van Strien had no idea it would lead him to one day shaking hands with the Commander in Chief.

As a volunteer ambassador, Van Strien often heard from military service men and women about the lack of a USO at RDU. He responded to these inquiries by setting out to create North Carolina's only airport-based USO.

Van Strien worked closely with the Airport Authority and the USO of North Carolina to make the USO at RDU a reality. It now serves as the home-away-from-home to thousands of traveling military and their families.

Van Strien's efforts did not go unnoticed. When President George W. Bush visited Raleigh for a town hall meeting in February, he singled out Van Strien to receive the President's Volunteer Service Award. Van Strien shook hands with the President when he arrived on Air Force One and rode in the motorcade to the town hall event.

Van Strien was also recently honored by the MetLife Foundation at the National Older Volunteers Enrich America awards. He received the honor of Community Champion. Congratulations to Jim Van Strien for being an ambassador for volunteerism at RDU.

RDU's Southern Jet Ranks High in National Survey

RDU's own Southern Jet was recently ranked second in two surveys of the top fixed-base operators (FBO) in the United States by Professional Pilot magazine and Aviation International News.

Professional Pilot serves the corporate and regional aviation industry, including pilots, managers and dispatchers. Each year the journal publishes its PRASE survey results, which stands for Preferences Regarding Aviation Services and Equipment. Additionally, Joy Richardson, Southern Jet's Customer Service Representative (CSR), was named ninth in the Top Ten Best FBO Employees. Congratulations to Southern Jet!

Southern Jet also ranked second in a survey by Aviation International News (AIN).

Southern Jet at RDU was trumped for the number one spot by Wilson Air Center, Memphis, TN with only .076 of a point. AIN remarked that Southern Jet catapulted an unprecedented 79 positions from last year's scores.
