Riding the Roads to Get You
to the Friendly Skies
RDU's Ground Transportation

Need a ride? RDU's ground transportation offers just what you are looking for from a taxi home to a Park & Ride shuttle. The ground transportation department oversees RDU's public transportation, commercial vehicles and traffic control.

To be a leader in customer service, the ground transportation department is making changes to RDU's busing operation including new state-of-the-art shuttle buses. These shuttles transport customers to and from the remote parking lots and the terminals.

RDU recently acquired two new Blue Bird buses which offer an air ride system for a smoother ride, wider aisles and steps for easy entering, exiting and luggage handling. The new buses also feature sound barrier ceilings and plush seating for a quieter and more comfortable ride.

Did you know the RDU buses talk to you?
RDU has installed a talking announcement system on its fleet of ten buses. The system makes informational announcements at each stop, including airlines located at each terminal, reminders for which lot the customer has parked in, and safety announcements. LED scrolling signs provide information to passengers who are hearing impaired.

RDU is currently testing the system, which is scheduled to be fully operational by the end of April.

The second phase of the project will include a Global Positioning System (GPS) that will enable RDU to monitor bus locations and manage the operation so that each bus stays on schedule. The GPS system is scheduled to be in operation by July 2005.
