Behind the scenes, RDU's in-line baggage system screened more than 2,000 bags. The system incorporates federally-mandated explosive detection equipment into the airport's baggage conveyor system. The system stretches 4,500 feet and carries bags from ticketing to airlines for transport to the aircraft.
Prior to its opening, nearly 8,000 people toured Terminal 2 during a community open house. Visitors enjoyed samples from the shops and restaurants, learned about the building and viewed areas normally closed to the public such as the federal inspection services facility.
With the opening of Terminal 2, Terminal C closed its doors. Opened in 1987, Terminal C closed at 8 p.m. on Oct. 25. The building was designed and built by American Airlines as its southeast hub and was operated by the airline until the Airport Authority bought the lease to the building in 2002.
With Terminal 2 open, work to complete the building now shifts to the site occupied by Terminal C. Demolition work on that facility has already begun and the terminal is expected to be completely demolished by early 2009. Completion of phase two of Terminal 2 is anticipated in early 2011.
New Terminal Opens Opportunities for the Region
Terminal 2 was built to support the Research Triangle Region's travel needs. From the regionally-inspired architecture to local restaurant fare and a new processing area for international travelers, Terminal 2 enhances the travel experience and opens up opportunities for the area.
“Without a doubt the new terminal will speak to the economic vitality and quality of our region,” said Harvey Schmitt, President and CEO, Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce. “It conveys in an instant a first impression of prosperity, sophistication and class. It will be a point of pride for local citizens and pronounce a confident regional image and brand to visitors from around the globe. Its modern utility will facilitate commerce and its curb appeal will help attract economic investment in our region.”
Just two weeks after the opening of the terminal, Delta Airlines announced it will begin nonstop service between RDU and Paris this spring. The service offers business and leisure travelers access to points beyond Paris, including Africa and Asia. Read more.
