Terminal C Update |
The new Terminal C is taking shape. Earlier this fall construction crews began erecting the structural steel, setting the framework for part of the new north concourse and security checkpoint. Over the next month, the contractor will continue to place structural steel and install the Glulam trusses.
Two huge transfer trusses frame the new security checkpoint area and become the “backbone” for airline check in and bag claim areas.
The Glulam truss, which is glued laminated timber, has been erected in what will become the north concourse. The Glulam trusses are one of the key architectural elements that will be used throughout the building to reflect the rolling hills of the piedmont region. |

Construction workers align the steel
beam into its footings. These beams shape the outline of the new concourse. |

The Glulam trusses span the interior of the terminal. The majority of the Glulam trusses are actual wood beams connected to steel. There are 47 Glulam trusses in the concourse areas and 41 trusses in the airline check in and security checkpoint areas.
When the project is complete, Terminal C will be transformed into a modern facility with greatly expanded airline ticketing, security checkpoint, concourse and bag claim areas.
Construction Highlights:
- Glulam trusses on the concourse span 90 feet and will be 30’ apart.
- In the airline check in and security checkpoint area, there are six Glulam beams that curve down. They are actually made of steel and covered with a wood veneer.
- The Glulam trusses at the security check point areas span 156 feet and weigh approximately 34 tons or 68,000 lbs.
- The concourse Glulam trusses weigh approximately 12 tons or 24,000 lbs.
- When the construction is complete, the amount of structural steel used in the building will be approximately 10,000 tons.
- The amount of concrete placed will be approximately 35,000 cubic yards.
- Approximately, 80 to 100 construction workers are on the project any given day.
- At the peak of construction, there will be 250 workers on site.
- Seventy-one subcontractors are working with the project’s general contractor, Archer Western Contractors. These subcontractors include suppliers, vendors and sub-subcontractors.
- Forty-three of the subcontractors are either based in North Carolina or have operations here.
