New Security Measures May Change the Way You Pack

The holidays are fast approaching. If you haven’t traveled recently, you should familiarize yourself with the latest security changes. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) adjusted its total ban on liquids, gels, and aerosols. Passengers are now allowed to carry through the security checkpoint travel-size toiletries (3 oz. or less) that fit comfortably in one quart size, clear plastic, zip top bag.

All liquids, gels and aerosols must be placed in one single, quart size, zip top, clear plastic bag. Gallon size bags or bags that are not zip top, such as fold-over sandwich bags are not allowed. Larger containers that are half-full or toothpaste tubes rolled up are not permitted through the security checkpoint.

should review the new measures
before arriving at the airport.

Each traveler can use only one plastic bag. Each traveler must remove their plastic bag from their carry-on and place it in a bin or on the conveyor belt for X-ray screening. X-raying separately will allow TSA security officers to more easily examine the declared items.

The following items are permitted, but must be declared to the TSA at the security checkpoint if not contained in a plastic bag and/or are over 3 oz. (90ml):

  • Baby formula/milk (to include breast milk) and baby food in containers if a baby or small child is traveling
  • Medications (liquid, gel and aerosol)
  • Liquids (to include juice) or gels for diabetic or other medical needs

Want to purchase your toiletries at the airport instead? You are able to bring onboard the aircraft liquids, gels, and/or aerosols purchased beyond the security checkpoint.

Electronic items including notebook computers, MP3 players and PDAs, as well as solid cosmetics, personal hygiene items such as lipstick, solid deodorant, lip balm, and items of similar consistency will continue to be allowed through the security checkpoint.

At RDU, we want the time you spend with us to be enjoyable, so we encourage you to visit the TSA's Web site for more information. And remember, if you're not sure whether an item will be allowed past the security checkpoint, it's probably best to pack it in your checked luggage or to leave it at home.
