RDU Welcomes Terminal A's Latest Retail Addition — The Corner

Our customers have asked for a small restaurant in Terminal A where they can grab a snack while waiting for family and friends to arrive. RDU is proud to announce the opening of The Corner before the holidays. Not unlike a convenience center, this new retailer will offer an assortment of newspapers, magazines, snacks, sandwiches, salads, fruit cups and other healthy snacks, beverages and gourmet coffee.

The Corner will be located in Terminal A near the Southwest and Air Tran ticketing counters, just down the hall from the main baggage claim area.

This gives passengers and ‘meeters and greeters' a new place to grab a snack or the latest periodical. Be sure to visit The Corner next time you pass through Terminal A.

Travelers entering RDU will notice ongoing construction on the Terminal A, or east side, of the airport. This project is called Runway 5R-23L Safety Area Improvements. This project is designed to upgrade the safety areas for Runway 5R-23L to meet current applicable Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) design standards, provide a safer runway environment and ensure emergency equipment access to the safety areas.

RDU will be working in the 1,000-foot areas beyond both ends of the runway to level out the topography, build an emergency access road and install improved drainage devices. The project involves a significant grading effort on each end of the runway and relocations of some FAA navigational instruments. In order to raise the elevation of the ground at the ends of the runway, the contractor will be hauling, grading, and compacting approximately 650,000 cubic yards of airport soil. They will also install 8,940 linear feet of round concrete pipe to facilitate drainage.

The contractor is working around the clock in order to minimize disruptions to service and to complete the project by the end of the year . Seventy-five percent of the funding for this project comes from a Federal Aviation Administration grant; the remaining costs will be paid for by the Authority.
