Phase 2, to be completed in 2008, involves the construction of approximately half of the terminal. This includes a portion of the ticketing, baggage claim, security checkpoint and all of the international arrivals area. The new 17-gate north concourse will also be completed in Phase 2.
The third phase entails the remainder of the central part of the concourse as well as any upgrades to the south concourse. Construction should be complete by 2009.
A Spotlight on the Departure Experience
The new Terminal C will be a memorable gateway, a timeless expression of our region. The major exterior and interior architectural elements are abstractions of North Carolina's agricultural, textile and hi-tech communities. Made from state-of-the-art materials and using cutting-edge technology, the roof's curvilinear forms and lenticular trusses pay homage not only to the area's rich past, but also its dynamic future.
Passengers departing from the new Terminal C will reach the ticketing area by traversing a wide pedestrian bridge sheltered by a glass and steel canopy. This canopy is the leading element in a series of ‘rolling hill' forms that make up the roof of both the terminal and concourse. The roof line recalls the natural landscape of the Piedmont region. Ceiling heights will vary in this area up to 60 feet high.
Once inside, the ticketing hall is at once welcoming and informative. Three ticketing islands will each include 20 check-in positions. Wooden roof trusses give the space a sense of scale and rhythm and also represent the local wooded countryside and its rich heritage of carpentry and crafts.
Whether you just checked in or if you arrived with a boarding pass, all passengers will proceed to a single security checkpoint area located just beyond the central portal. The large security checkpoint area will be greatly expanded and streamlined for a more efficient screening process.
A variety of concessions are also planned for the pre-security area so that family, friends and other ‘meeters and greeters' can relax and grab a bite to eat with departing and arriving passengers. |
